Learning to draw a Mandala was only meant to keep my creativity flowing while away from my studio. Slowly they have turned into my main focus. Being able to switch between painting and drawing has brought balance to my art practice.
The process of creating a Mandala
Drawing the structure

I use a pencil and ruler to find the center of the page, a compass for the circles and a protractor to evenly divide. As I construct the frame work I become inspired and the design begins to reveal itself.
When I have a rough sketch I use liner pens to finalize the design.

Applying Color

I scan my finished drawing, resize and print off the template. I apply a thin layer of oil paint on the back and tape it to the canvas. Using a pen I trace over the structure leaving out the details.
After removing the template.

Starting at the center I work my way out.
After I get a layer of color down I allow time to dry. This keeps me from smudging my previous work.

When the color is right I finish with line work and details.
